The following are a few simple tips on how to measure for curtains, which means you don’t need to make any deductions or calculations and can simply provide us with a list of the measurements listed below. If you’ve purchased your curtains but not sure how to hang them up, check out our ultimate guide on how to hang curtains.
Taking Measurements for S Fold Curtains
All you need to do to install S fold curtains is take measurements in the same way you would for a blind. This is because a track will be included with the curtains; simply follow the simple instructions to ensure a perfect fit for your new curtains.
Face fitting measurement for an architrave
The following are the measurements you must take if you want to fit the curtains to the window architraves.
- You must measure the width from the architrave’s outer edge to the opposite edge.
- You should also measure the space where you want the curtains to hang from the top of the architrave.
Measuring a square set of curtains
If you want the curtain length to reach outside the window recess without an architrave, measure the recess and add a little extra measurement to all sides to ensure proper coverage. Remember to precisely measure the area where you want the curtains to overlap. It is recommended that you overlap the window recess by at least 70 mm at the top and 50 mm on each side to reduce light leakage. The overlap at the bottom is a matter of personal preference, but keep in mind potential obstacles such as radiators. It is recommended that you use a metal measuring tape if you want accurate measurements.
Bay Windows
Face fitting curtains are also a good option if you have a bay window. All you have to do is think of the bay as one large window and follow the same steps as described above.
If you’re trying to decide what colour curtains you should get for your bay windows, we’ve created an article, providing you with some useful tips on how to choose.
Important tip!
If you are replacing existing hanging curtains and want to ensure that the next pair is the same size, measure the width of the pole and the drop from the top of the pole to the bottom of the curtain length. This is the simplest method for obtaining precise measurements, and your curtains can be made to be the same size. However, it should be noted that the spacing between the folds of S fold curtains is normally 9 cm, so the appearance of your curtains may differ slightly.
Taking measurements for recess fitting
If you want the curtains to fit inside the window recess, measure the full width and height of the recess. Our experts will make the necessary deductions to ensure that you get perfectly fitted curtains. You would need to measure the width and the drop three times and provide us with the smallest measurement. Avoid making any deductions because the deductions will be made from our own specific recess fitting calculations.
Important tip!
The recess must be deep enough to accommodate the curtains. However, any such obstacles, such as handles, must also be considered, and the recess depth must be at least 75 mm.
If the recess is made of tiles, you’ll need to measure the space between the tiles to get an accurate width measurement.
Taking Measurements for Standard Windows
For a standard window frame, measure the curtain track using the pole width rather than the width of the window itself. If you are going to install a new track, it should be at least 200 mm on each side of the windows and at least 150 mm on the top.
To measure curtain poles, simply measure the width of the poles between the finials or end caps to obtain the correct curtain width.
For standard curtain tracks, measure the entire width of the track to determine the proper curtain width. Curtains with a track overlap may require you to measure the full width of the track as well as the width of the overlap, then add the two measurements together to get the correct width.
Measuring the correct curtain drop
You can hang the curtains from the floor to the sill or even below the sill. In either case, curtains that hang all the way to the floor should be at least 15 mm above the floor. Take measurements at least 150 to 200 mm below the sill for curtains, and at least 15 mm above the sill for curtains that measure all the way to the sill.
Decorative pencil pleat curtains measurements
When using a curtain pole to take measurements, measure from the underside of the decorative railing to where you want the pleated curtains to end at the bottom.
Decorative track heading measurements
When measuring curtain track, make sure to measure from the top of the track to where the curtains will finish at the bottom.
Eyelet curtains measuring
Eyelet curtains can be used with poles with a diameter of up to 33mm. Simply measure from the top of the pole to where you want the curtain to end at the bottom. The curtain is then constructed with 30 mm of fabric above the top of the track where it was attached to the pole. Because this is done automatically, all you need to do is measure the top of the curtain pole.
